This technique of arranging smaller photographs or tiles in a grid pattern to form the desired image is commonly referred to as a photo mosaic or photo collage. The individual photos can be chosen based on their color and tone so that when viewed from a distance, the final image appears to be a single, seamless image, even though it is made up of many smaller photographs. Photo mosaics can be used to create large-scale images for murals, advertising, and other purposes. While digital and traditional photographic techniques can be used to create photo mosaics, I prefer a purely digital format.
My inspiration came from well-known photographers that have used photo mosaic techniques in their work. German fine-art photographer Thomas Kellner combines many individual large-format photographs with a shifted camera perspective to create images of famous architectural monuments. British painter and photographer David Hockney has used photo mosaic techniques in some of his works. American digital artist Joshua Davis uses photo mosaics to create large-scale abstract images. Chinese photographer Liu Bolin creates photo mosaics by carefully arranging objects and people in a scene to compose a final image. American digital artist Charles Csuri is considered one of the pioneers of computer graphics and photo mosaic techniques.
