News — contemplative photography

The Camera I Carry is my personal reflection on National Camera Day. Moving through my evolution from brushes to film to iPhone, and drawing on a recent wet plate collodion demonstration at the Monterey Museum of Art, I consider what connects Niépce's eight-hour exposure in 1826 to the woman on the pier that morning with her phone raised to the fog. The answer, I suggest, is not technology. It is intention.

This atmospheric photograph of Point Lobos explores the creative power of mystery. Rather than documenting a landscape, it invites viewers into a space of uncertainty where fog, sea, and shadow blur the boundary between reality and imagination. The image reflects a belief that what remains hidden can often be more evocative than what is fully revealed.

In this layered, painterly work from the Psychology of Trees series, I transform a natural form into a symbolic figure of resilience and quiet resistance. Through atmospheric depth and the delicate application of gold inspired by the Japanese Maki-e tradition, the piece reflects on memory, fragility, and the enduring presence of nature in an uncertain world. Both contemplative and luminous, the work invites viewers into an emotional landscape where beauty and impermanence coexist.

The image explores how light not only reveals but reshapes reality, inviting viewers into a contemplative dialogue between presence and impermanence. This work revisits a fleeting morning in Pebble Beach where light transformed a forest into a transient, almost sacred space. Two distant figures emerge as symbolic travelers within a larger meditation on time, memory, and perception. 

In this poetic diptych, a cellist and an abstract detail become visual counterparts in a meditation on the shape of sound. Tthe image explores how music travels through space, transforming into rhythm, echo, and form. The work reflects my fascination with translating the invisible qualities of music, memory, and atmosphere into layered visual narratives.
